Before you plan your day, it helps to know the real Cu Chi Tunnels distance from the city and how long the journey takes. The short answer: the Cu Chi Tunnels are about 70 km from central Ho Chi Minh City, and the drive usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours each way. The longer answer depends on which tunnel site you visit, what time you leave and how you travel.

Cu Chi Tunnels Distance: Ben Dinh vs Ben Duoc
There are two preserved tunnel sites, and the Cu Chi Tunnels distance is not the same for both.
- Ben Dinh is the closer of the two and the most visited. Some tunnel sections have been widened for visitors, and the site is compact and easy to follow on a first visit.
- Ben Duoc is further out, with a quieter atmosphere, a memorial temple and a larger historical park. It suits travellers who want more time and space.
Both share the same history. If you have a preference, mention it when you book and we will confirm what works for your date and group.
Why Travel Time Matters More Than the Cu Chi Tunnels Distance
On paper, the Cu Chi Tunnels distance looks short. In practice, the first part of the drive is spent getting out of the city, and morning traffic in Ho Chi Minh City can be slow. Leaving between 07:30 and 08:00 avoids the heaviest rush and gets you to the tunnels before the midday heat. The return trip often meets afternoon traffic, so finish times are always approximate.
Ways to Cover the Cu Chi Tunnels Distance

Organised tour. The simplest option. Transport and an English-speaking guide are arranged for you, so the Cu Chi Tunnels distance becomes part of the experience rather than a problem to solve. Your guide explains the history on the way, and you arrive with context.
Private car with driver. More flexible, and comfortable for families or small groups. You still want a guide at the site, though, or much of the meaning is lost.
Public bus. It is possible, but it involves changing buses and takes much longer than driving, which leaves little time at the tunnels themselves.
Motorbike or ride-hailing. Riding 70 km each way in heavy traffic is tiring, and finding a ride back from a rural site in the afternoon is not always easy.
A Realistic Half-Day Plan

With the Cu Chi Tunnels distance in mind, a half-day trip looks like this. You check in at Suntrail Gallery at 07:30–08:00 and drive out of the city, with a possible rest stop at a lacquerware workshop where shopping is optional. In the late morning you explore the tunnels, learn how local people lived, moved and survived underground, and see the tunnel network, hiding places and wartime displays. There is a break for lunch, at your own expense, before you head back. Expect to finish at Suntrail Gallery between 15:00 and 16:00, with complimentary coffee or tea.
