Can Gio is Ho Chi Minh City’s coastal district, a wide stretch of mangrove forest, salt fields and fishing villages where the rivers meet the sea. On a map it looks close to the city centre. Getting to Can Gio, however, takes longer than most visitors expect, and the reason is a river crossing. Here is what getting to Can Gio really involves, and the easiest ways to do it.
Getting to Can Gio: The Route
From central Ho Chi Minh City you head south through Nha Be towards the Binh Khanh ferry, the main river crossing on the way. On the far side, Rung Sac Road runs through the mangroves all the way to the coast. It is the only main road linking Can Gio with the inner city, so every car, bus and motorbike uses it.
How Long Does Getting to Can Gio Take?
Local media put road travel from the city centre to the Can Gio coastline at about two to three hours. The biggest variable is the ferry: at peak times, queues build up on the approach roads. Leaving early in the morning and returning before the evening rush makes getting to Can Gio and back much smoother.
Transport Options for Getting to Can Gio
Day trip with a guide. The easiest way. Transport, timing and stops are planned around the ferry, and a guide explains the mangrove ecosystem and the area’s wartime history as you go.
Private car. Comfortable for families and small groups, and flexible if you want to stop at specific places. A driver who knows the ferry timing saves a lot of waiting.
Public bus. Buses run from the city towards Can Gio and are very cheap, but the journey is long, and you still need transport between the sights once you arrive.
Motorbike. Popular with locals at weekends. The ride along Rung Sac Road is flat and green, but it is a long day in the sun and not ideal for first-time riders in Vietnam.
What Is Changing for Getting to Can Gio
Getting to Can Gio will become much faster over the next few years. The Can Gio Bridge, which will replace the Binh Khanh ferry, is planned for completion in 2029 and is expected to cut the trip to about 40 to 50 minutes. Construction of an urban railway from Ben Thanh to Can Gio began in December 2025, with operation targeted for late 2028. Until then, the ferry remains part of the journey.
Tips for a Smooth Day
- Start early to stay ahead of ferry queues and the midday heat.
- Bring insect repellent, a hat and plenty of water for the mangrove areas.
- Wear shoes you do not mind getting muddy.
- Check the forecast in the rainy season, when afternoon storms are common.
Is Getting to Can Gio Worth It?
If you have already seen the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta, yes. Can Gio feels greener, wider and quieter than the usual routes, and the journey itself is part of the change of pace. Getting to Can Gio is simply easier when someone else handles the ferry and the timing.
