Suntrail Gallery is our workshop space in Ho Chi Minh City, where the conical hat painting sessions actually happen — separate from our day tours, though the two can be combined.
It’s a small, hands-on studio setup rather than a large tourist attraction, which is part of why sessions stay personal even with mixed groups.
How Long Does It Take?
Most sessions run somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes depending on how detailed your design gets and how many guests are painting at once. It’s not a rushed, assembly-line format — but it’s also not a multi-hour art class. Plan for roughly an hour including the introduction, and you’ll have margin either way.
Do You Need to Book Ahead?
Booking ahead is strongly recommended, especially for groups, since it lets us prepare enough hats and materials and confirm a time that doesn’t clash with another group. Solo travelers or couples sometimes get lucky with a walk-in, but there’s no guarantee of availability without a heads-up first.
What Happens, Step by Step
You arrive at the gallery and get a short introduction to the conical hat — where it comes from, how it’s traditionally used. Each guest then receives a plain hat and basic painting materials.
From there it’s self-directed: sketch lightly if you want, or paint freely. No formal instruction beyond the intro is required, and staff are around if you want design suggestions. You leave with the hat you painted — no drying time needed before you take it.

We keep this flexible rather than one fixed number because a solo traveler and a 15-person school group need genuinely different setups.
Can You Add It to a Tour?
Yes — a lot of visitors combine it with a day trip rather than treating it as a separate stop. It pairs naturally before or after a Mekong Delta day tour or Cu Chi Tunnels tour, depending on which fits your schedule better.
